Renowned French writer of adventure and science fiction novels Jules Verne (1828-1905) dedicated the Pazin Cave and the Castle the main dramatic role in his novel Mathias Sandorf (1885).
 In the novel, the Hungarian count Mathias Sandorf is disclosed in his conspiracy against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, taken to the Castle of Pazin and sentenced to death before the military court. Sandorf escapes from the Castle descending a cliff of the Cave of Pazin and reaches an abyss. Drifted by the swollen Pazinčica River, he reaches the Lim Canal and Rovinj through the Istrian underground.
 Adventures of count Sandorf continue in the novel all across the Mediterranean, reaching Dubrovnik, Boka Kotorska, Sicily, Gibraltar, Monte Carlo and the African coast.

Jules Verne never visited Pazin or Istria. However, he used detailed descriptions of Pazin, the Castle and the cave from the travel book of his compatriot Charles Yriarte Coasts of the Adriatic Sea, and he received photographs from the mayor of Pazin Giuseppe Cechi.
Theatre performances based on the novel Mathias Sandorf were set up in France, Germany and America, with three film adaptations in 1920, 1963, and in 1980. Verne's descriptions of the Cave of Pazin encouraged the famous French speleologist Edouard Alfred Martel to come to Pazin on three occasions between 1893 and 1897 to study the Pazin underground.

The year 1998 in Pazin witnessed the foundation of Jules Verne Club, which, by organizing the cultural and tourist manifestation Jules Verne’s Days in June, Science Fiction Literature Festival in August, and a whole series of other activities popularizes works of this author and promotes Pazin as the town of Jules Verne.
